23/07/2008 - Cheetahs take to track in 2008

Oxford fans gathered last night (22nd July) to hear plans for the rest of the season from Nick Andrews, who has gained permission from the BSPA to run an Oxford team in Conference League challenges in 2008.

Nick explained that he has spoken to a number of riders from the title-winning side of 2005 and the powerful 2007 side who have agreed to pull on the Cheetahs race jacket again, and has even been contacted by a number of rising talents who have not ridden for Oxford before. The Oxford squad for 2008 will include Kyle Hughes, John Branney and Marc Andrews from the 2005 side, Brendan Johnson, Andrew Bargh, Matt Bates, Matt Davis and Ben Hopwood from 2007 and new Cheetahs Barrie Evans, Alex McLeod, Jamie Smith and Danny Warwick. Nick also asked if Jamie Courtney, who was present at the fans forum, would be the club captain for 2008. Jamie was shocked but gladly accepted.

Nick explained that if all goes to plan there will be a number of challenge matches this season – second halves at Poole, Somerset and Reading are all but confirmed and full 15-heat matches are penciled in against Weymouth, Sittingbourne and hopefully Rye House, but the big news is that the first full 15-heat match will take place at Reading on Monday August 11th against similarly homeless Wimbledon.

Nick also introduced the team sponsor for 2008 and, if all goes to plan, 2009.Training for Success specialise in providing training for security staff and are well established throughout the south. Company Director Ian Kirke explained that he was a long time speedway fan, having followed Oxford since 1975, and was excited to be a part of a new chapter in the club’s history – especially as he will be co-managing the team for at least one meeting!

Nick has asked that as many fans make it to Reading on the 11th as possible – he will be inviting the management of the GRA to the meeting to prove to them that there is still support for speedway in Oxford and the best way to do that is with as many bodies in the stadium as possible. By supporting the Cheetahs at Reading we will be sending a powerful message to the owners of Oxford Stadium, so join us, bring your flags and horns, make lots of noise and enjoy being back on track!

18/04/2008 - Thank you to Hilary

The OSSC Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the long serving Chairperson Hilary Peasley who stood down from her role due to work commitments. Hilary gave more years than most can remember to the Supporters Club and I'm sure everyone will agree what a great job she has done.

15/04/2008 - AGM Update

The OSSC were approached by the Councillors who addressed the Fans at an open forum last year for an opportunity to give an update on what they've been doing since then. With this in mind it was decided that the best time would be before the OSSC AGM. Therefore the start time on Friday 18th April is 19:00 for the Councillors to give their update and then the AGM will follow. The Question of Speedway Quiz has been postponed and the date was that will be released when it has been arranged.

22/03/2008 - Supporters Club AGM date

The OSSC Committee is pleased to announce the 2008 Oxford Speedway Supporters Club AGM has been rearranged and will be held on Friday 18th April at 7.30pm in the Green Road Club, Kidlington. At the AGM the 2007 accounts and Chairpersons report will be presented, and the Committee will stand for re-election. After the AGM it is our intention to discuss plans for Supporters Club activities in 2008 and would encourage as many Oxford Supporters to attend as possible and share their ideas, whether they are members of the Supporters Club or not. Finally, the annual Question of Speedway quiz will take place, hosted once again by Rob Peasley. There will, of course, be opportunities on the night to join the Supporters Club in 2008 and also sign up for the monthly Lifeline draw.

We hope we can count on your support at this difficult time and look forward to seeing you at the Green Road Club on the 18th of April.

The OSSC Committee would like to thank everyone at the Green Road Club for providing us with an alternative location for the AGM, and Chris Brown of the SOS for his help in arranging the venue. The OSSC are looking forward to working with the SOS in the coming year. The OSSC would also like to thank Bryn Williams for his invaluable help getting Supporters Club updates onto the official Oxford Speedway website over the past few difficult months.

16/01/2008 - Supporters Club AGM UPDATE

With the current uncertainty surrounding Oxford Speedway, the OSSC Committee feels it would not be advisable to hold the Supporters Club AGM on the 25th of January. The AGM has been postponed and will be rearranged for a date when the situation has been resolved or at the very least clarified and we can update the members of the Oxford Speedway Supporters Club on plans for 2008. Once the new date has been agreed it will be communicated to our members once more.

The OSSC is committed to securing speedway in Oxford and is working closely with the SOS to bring the current situation to a swift and amicable conclusion. We hope our members will stand by us and understand our reasons for delaying the AGM.

19/12/2007 - Supporters Club AGM

The date has been set for the Supporters Club AGM. The date is Friday 25th January and will be held at the Stadium. The AGM will start at 19:30 in the upstairs bar. At time of writing, the future of Oxford Speedway still hangs in the balance but whatever the outcome the AGM will still take place. You can download the OSSC Membership form from theDownloads section. If you wish to download and fill in the details you can either bring them along to the AGM or post it to OSSC Secretary, 6 Bailey Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 3HY.

14/08/2007 - Collection for Andrew and Jordan

After a busy start to the month for the Cheetahs, two of our riders have been left counting the cost. Andrew Bargh suffered a dislocated ankle in a crash at Sittingbourne which also seriously damaged his bike, and Jordan Frampton has seized no fewer then three engines since the start of August. To help Andrew and Jordan get back on track as soon as possible, the Oxford Speedway Supporters Club will be organising a collection at the next home match on Friday, 17th August. Any money taken on the night will be supplemented by a contribution from the Conference Rider Support Fund, which was set up by the OSSC at the start of the season for just such an eventuality.

Be sure to look for the Committee on Friday night and dig deep to help two of Oxford’s most exciting riders at this difficult time. With your help we can get Andrew and Jordan racking up the points once again and the Cheetahs can cement their place in the playoffs!

If you’re interested in joining the Conference Rider Support Fund, either contact the Supporters Club at info@ossc.me.uk, or come and see the Committee on racenights in the Upper Bar.

04/07/2007 - Post Cardiff

After another successful trip to Cardiff for the British GP, the OSSC Committee would like to thanks all the fans who joined us for making the trip as enjoyable as it was, and also for their patience while trying to get the coaches through the traffic on the M4 and then parked safely in Cardiff. We hope you had as much fun on the day as we did, and look forward to seeing you again next year when, hopefully, we can see another British winner. If you have any comments about the way the trip was run, or any suggestions for the future, please either come and see a member of the Committee on racenight or go to the 'Contact Us' section of the website and let us know what you think.

Because the Oxford Cheetahs New Era Trophy was sadly washed out, the Raceday 50/50 draw was rolled over to the home meeting against Buxton. The winning ticket was Blue 84, which was claimed by Bradley Andrews who picked up £90. We'd also like to pass our congratulations on to Andy Webster who picked up the £50 prize in the June Conference League Rider Support Fund Draw. Sadly Andy failed to win the rollover, but on the bright side the prize fund for next month stands at a possible £250. If you're interested in taking part in the draws for the rest of the season, come and see one of the Committee on racenights for details on how to join up.

18/06/2007 - Oxford Speedway Supporters Club Statement:

After a dark few weeks, the near future is looking bright as the OSSC look forward to the trip to Cardiff for the British GP and the relaunch of Conference League speedway under Allen Trump.

Those who have booked seats on the coach to Cardiff next Saturday (June 30th) should be ready for the coach to leave The Plough in Wheatley at 12.00 or outside LIDL at 12.15 – Please be aware there is no parking available at the LIDL store (you can try it, but don’t blame us if you get clamped!). On the coach there will be the usual fun and games, namely the GP sweepstake and the bonus ball draw, so get ready to dig deep – all money goes to the new Promotion to help the relaunch!

It’s only a matter of days before the newly saved Lions take to the track again. During the meeting the Supporters Club Committee will be amongst the crowd as normal operating the Conference League 50 / 50 draw, and also the June Conference League Rider Support Fund Draw will take place during the interval, so be sure to be there to see your number come out and take your chance at the rollover which is now up to £150.

The Supporters Club will be present on Wednesday at the Fans Forum to answer any questions you may have, or go to the ‘Contact’ button for other ways to get in touch with the Committee.

30/05/2007 - Oxford Speedway Supporters Club Statement:

The Oxford Speedway Supporters Club is an independent body, run by the supporters of Oxford Speedway for the benefit of Oxford Speedway. We undertake work to raise funds to aid the management with the day-to-day running of speedway in Oxford, both at Elite and Conference level. In 2006 we were able to present to the management of Oxford speedway with over five thousand pounds, raised mostly on racenights through donations from the fans of the club.

In light of the current situation at Oxford we would seek to reassure fans of the club we will be working closely with either Aaron Lanney or any incoming Promoter and other fans groups to ensure speedway continues in Oxford. Funds will be made available to help ensure that speedway continues if possible in 2007 and onwards into the future, and the Oxford Speedway Supporters Club will continue to assist the supporters of Oxford Speedway no matter what the future holds.

The Supporters Club would also like to reassure fans that have booked seats on the coaches to the British GP at Cardiff on June 30th that the coaches will be running as previously advertised. Ticket vouchers purchased from the Supporters Club are still valid, and tickets will be presented on the day. There are still limited spaces available on the coach, but sadly all tickets allocated to the club are now sold out. Anybody who has a concern about the coaches or who is interested in booking one of the remaining seats should email Cardiff2007@ossc.me.uk for more details, or log on to the Supporters Club website at www.ossc.me.uk and click on the Cardiff 2007 button. Also you can contact the OSSC on 07092 893318.
